Welcome to the Patty-verse! At the behest of my dear friend H, I have decided to finally update this website. Ahem…it has been two years. We have some catching up to do :)

ARTIST BIO
Patty Lee is a confirmed bibliophile and has made a study of the book arts. Descriptive book architecture, or the use of structure to enhance storytelling, is a favored pursuit. Her work consists of an exploration of historical bookbinding and the invention of hybrid book structures. An enduring curiosity about ancient cities and languages, complex systems and the nature of their connections, and theoretical schematics continues to influence the direction of her work. Currently, she resides in Maryland and is the Bookbinding Associate at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center and a member of the Guild of Book Workers.

Here is the artist statement that was displayed alongside my little birdy:
I have always been fascinated by the idea that mechanical beings can achieve sentience and develop emotions, despite being made mostly of metal and inorganic components. I imagine that somehow a diverse milieu could be the impetus of an awakening. It is my belief that the purposeful and well-intentioned interaction between beings, each regarding the other as different in composition and social convention, increases the chance to find common ground and peace.

My Elementals bird is made of warm metallic papers to evoke a sense of its journey towards understanding and peace. There is a hidden compartment along its spine that has a secret. What this Elementals bird doesn't know yet, is that inside of its body glows a heart already radiant with conscious life.

Introduction to Bookbinding Workshop Series
Date: Two Tuesdays, June 18 & 25, 6-9pm
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $120 *(plus $15 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4 – 8
Description: Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own journals, notebooks, photo albums, or scrapbooks but don't know where to start? In this two-day workshop series, students will gain a basic understanding of the materials and equipment commonly used in bookbinding. Students will learn three different book structures; including pamphlet, accordian, and Japanese stab binding. We will also discuss how we can take our newly learned bookbinding skills and change the size and shape of a book to suit our personal design needs and style.

Book in a Clamshell (Making a book and a clamshell box)
Date: Three sessions, July 11 6-10pm, July 16 & 18 6-9pm
Instructor: Lee Marchalonis and Patricia Lee
Tuition: $280 (plus $35 materials fee payable to instructors)
Enrollment: 4 – 8
Description: Making artistic books has become more popular in the last few years even as we become more firmly established in the digital age. Hand bound books are borrowing from history and looking towards the future with new kinds of book structures. In this class, students will learn how to make an exposed spine hand bound book and then how to make a clamshell box to keep your work of art safe. Clamshell boxes are frequently used in the protection of rare books. Students should have a strong understanding of basic bookbinding skills for this class (ex. covering boards, punching text/board). A detailed supply list will be provided upon enrollment.

Intermediate Bookbinding Workshop Series
Date: Two Tuesdays, July 23 & 30 6-10pm
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $160 *(plus $20 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4 – 8
Description: Do you have some experience with bookbinding, but want to take it to the next level? In this series of two evening workshops we will experience the delights of three exposed sewing structures, including long stitch, two-needle Coptic stitch, and sewing over tapes. Each student will use decorative paper and a rainbow of colored waxed linen thread to create their own collection of uniquely designed books. This new format will give you the chance to explore how different materials and book designs can showcase your art or writing. Students should have a strong understanding of basic bookbinding skills for this class (ex. covering boards, punching text/board). A detailed supply list will be provided upon enrollment.

Hybrid Book Workshop
Date: Tuesday August 13, 6-10pm
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $80 *(plus $15 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4 – 8
Description: This interesting and useful book design combines a Japanese stab stitching to attach a leather spine to a hard cover and a long stitch to sew the text. It is perfect for journals and sketchbooks that need to lay flat for use or display. Kits will be provided with all that you need to make your book, though you can bring your own decorative paper choices and incorporate them into your design. Students should have a strong understanding of basic bookbinding skills for this class (ex. covering boards, punching covers/text). A detailed supply list will be provided upon enrollment.

Creature Book Workshop
Date: Tuesday August 27, 6-10pm
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $80 *(plus $20 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4 – 8
Description: These fantastical book designs will have all of the book parts that you are used to, including text paper and covers, but they will also look like no book you have ever seen before! The instructor will provide three different creature book kits to choose from, and students will make one creature book to happily haunt their bookshelves. The covers will be made from lovely Italian leather that will be cold-embossed with a creature-iffic design. These books will be more like a book sculpture than a typical book that can written in or drawn on. Students do not have to have any previous bookbinding experience, but should feel comfortable with easy sewing and using an exacto knife. A detailed supply list will be provided upon enrollment.
